Sarlitza Palace Hotel, Thermi

Sarlitza PalaceThe Sarlitza Palace Hotel in Thermi was designed by French architects and built in 1909 by order of the Turkish Sovereign Hasan Mola Moustafa. It once attracted Kings and Heads of State. For more than 40 years visitors and celebrities from all over the world were drawn by its opulence and healing waters. It began to fall into decline in the 60′s and eventually closed in 1980. “Sarlitza Palace” means Palace of the Yellow Spring, after the thermal springs that are located next to the hotel.

The Prefecture of the Northern Aegean has submitted a proposal to the hotel’s current owners to return the Sarlitza Palace to its former glory.  The Prefecture will undertake the restoration of the existing buildings and maintenance of the hot springs. It further hopes, pending approval by the state archaeological and other services, to fund the construction of additional facilities to turn the grounds into a thermal spring therapeutic centre or a tourism development centre.

Update June 2014 – Rumour locally is that the project has faltered in its early stages. The fear is that the hotel will be beyond repair and restoration before the bureaucracy is overcome.

I am trying to find more information on the status of the project. Please email us if you have any information to add.

About Robin

We started visiting Lesvos such a long time ago we can't remember when. We simply fell in love with the island in general and Molyvos in particular. In 2005 we bought some land and tried to manage the building of our house from the UK. Holidays became site visits and our house was [mostly] completed in 2007. In 2009 we sold up in the UK and moved to Molyvos. This is now our home and we count ourselves amongst the luckiest of the lucky. I am a member of the Molyvos Tourist Association, providing photographs for their brochures and general publicity. Most of my time is spent on activities to encourage tourism or taking photographs of one of the most beautiful places on earth. I also produce calendars and sell them on-line through Lesvos Calendars. Please visit and have a look. You can also see more of my photographs on my  Robin Sanders Photography website.

  1. Good news that Rob. Its such a shame to let fantastic buildings like this go to ruin, it was always a dream of mine if i won a lottery i would purchase it and restore it

  2. Good news indeed. It’s such a wonderful location would love to see it sympathetically restored and put to some good use. When we were there in 2011 there were a team of people clearing the grounds and strimming the overgrown grass etc at the front so it did look as though something was afoot. If you win the lottery lefteris I’ll help you restore it!! Do keep us posted Rob if you hear anything.

  3. I live in Los Angeles Ca. my parents were from Lesvos .I love the island of Lesvos every time I visit Greece I visit also my parents birth place .
It is ashamed to have a beautiful building in Thermi staying with the doors locked waiting to be remodeled and open its doors for many people and tourists from all over the world.
I tried to get in touch with Mrs Kalogirou but she avoids any communications.
I visited the island and her office I left several messages to be contacted but I understand her time is valuable as mine!!!!
