About Robin

We started visiting Lesvos such a long time ago we can't remember when. We simply fell in love with the island in general and Molyvos in particular. In 2005 we bought some land and tried to manage the building of our house from the UK. Holidays became site visits and our house was [mostly] completed in 2007. In 2009 we sold up in the UK and moved to Molyvos. This is now our home and we count ourselves amongst the luckiest of the lucky. I am a member of the Molyvos Tourist Association, providing photographs for their brochures and general publicity. Most of my time is spent on activities to encourage tourism or taking photographs of one of the most beautiful places on earth. I also produce calendars and sell them on-line through Lesvos Calendars. Please visit and have a look. You can also see more of my photographs on my  Robin Sanders Photography website.

Moni Pithariou

Moni PithariouMoni Pithariou is devoted to the Archangels and is located in a beautiful ravine in the hills close to Eressos. The name of the monastery is taken from the shape of the ravine which resembles a jar (Πιθάρι – Pithari in Greek).  A dam has been built across the ravine, forming a large lake.

There is little historical data about the foundation of the monastery which has resulted in much debate among researchers. An Ottoman record of the tax affairs of the region dated 1548 suggests an already established monastery. The monastery is further mentioned in a 1709 ledger which records the tax as 107 kilos of olive oil. Continue reading

There’s a goat on the roof of your car!

You can’t visit Greece without seeing the odd goat or two (or twenty). They are to be seen all over Greece, merrily munching on some thorny bush that would defeat any other animal. Sunshine is also a fact of Greek life and it is no fun to return to a boiling hot car. The obvious answer is to park your car beneath a tree and take advantage of the shade that it offers.

Or is it?

When we went to Greek lessons, we learnt lots of useful and interesting Greek phrases.

Υπάρχει μια κατσίκα στην οροφή του αυτοκινήτου σας!
[There’s a goat on the roof of your car!]

was not one of the phrases we thought that we would ever need……until today!

Aeolic Sanctuary of Klopedi

Sanctuary of KlopediOn a hillside overlooking the fertile plain of Arisvi lies the ruins of the ancient Aeolic Sanctuary of Klopedi. Here, at the beginning of the last century, Dimitrios Evangelides, Curator of the local Ephorate of Antiquities at that time, excavated the remains of two archaic temples. These are considered important monuments for the history of ancient architecture, as they remain unique examples of the Aeolic style in Greece. Continue reading
